Gilding Effects
The purity of gold leaf is measured in carats. The number of carats signifies the number of parts of pure gold in the metal, which is most commonly thought of as containing 24parts. Pure gold contains 24parts gold out of 24and so is 24-carat gold. As other metals are added, the purity decreases, giving different colors of gold such as white, pale lemon and mid-green. Gold is also available in different weights and thicknesses. Apart from the differences in weight and color, gold leaf is supplied in two forms called loose and transfer
Loose-leaf vs Transfer leaf
Loose-leaf comes in sheets between rouged paper. The pack or book of loose leaf needs to be carefully handled so that leaves do not slide out. In the case of transfer leaf, a rectangle of tissue larger than the leaf is placed in each opening of the book and the book is then compressed so that the gold adheres to the tissue. Transfer leaf is the
leaf most commonly used by amateur gilders. It was always considered a safer option by craftspeople working out of doors, as there was less chance of the precious metal disappearing in a gust of wind.
Transfer leaf is the only leaf suitable for oil gilding but is not available in such a wide range of weights and colors as loose leaf. Although loose leaf requires a larger initial outlay for equipment, it can be used on surfaces where it is difficult to apply transfer leaf.
If you are only planning to gild one or two small items, transfer leaf may well be the cheaper option, but if you decide to start gilding on a regular basis, it is a good idea to master the skills of cutting and handling loose leaf.
